Utah Dredging Permit Information
I believe that the State of Utah has no idea how many prospectors, miners, or rock hounds there are in Utah. One way we can let them know how many of us are out here is for each of us to send in a Utah State Recreational Dredging and Sluicing Application. These permits are free. The only cost to you is the time it takes to fill one out, put it in an envelope, and a 37-cent stamp to mail it. It is an easy matter to fill out. Also, no one will be checking to see if you do or do not go to the places that you list on the form. ** If you need advice or help filling one out, there are many members in N.U.P.A. that would be happy to help you.
If the State can see that there are a large number of people participating in this hobby, they will be more inclined to add more streams and rivers to their "open" list.
I believe that most of the people at the Division of Water Rights are on our side. With our submitted applications, they will be able to tell their bosses and our legislators that there are a lot of recreational miners in Utah. Numbers DO count.
You can call them at 801-538-7414 or write them at: Utah State Department of Natural Resources; Division of Water Rights; 1594 West North Temple, Suite 220; Box 146300; Salt Lake City, Utah 84114. If you have the time and want to visit them, they have a store there with a lot of neat maps and books about Utah. If you visit them, please take lots of money. I usually end up spending at least $30.00 before I get out of the store.
The Division of Water Rights also have a website that you can download a copy of the application to print off and mail in. It is: http://waterrights.utah.gov/strmalt/forms.htm
